Program of Studies 21-22

Our 21-22 Program of Studies was recently approved by the School Committee and can be found here.  You can also locate the Program of Studies by going to the CHS mainpage and clicking on the Student Resoures section.  We encourage all parents and students to view the Program of Studies together and to make thoughtful and informed decisions about which classes best meet your child's learning goals.  If your child is an underclassmen, consider mapping out the next few years.  Identify courses that may align with future college or career goals.  As always, connect with your child's school counselor should you have any questions.  Please see the next section below for information on this year's Course Selection process.

Course Selection Process

Beginning on February 10th, students will begin the course selection process.  It is important that students thoughtfully plan out their course of study.  Decisions made in their early high school years can impact future course scheduling.  Students are encouraged to access our Program of Studies to map out their plan of study.  More information about our Program of Studies can be found in the Program of Studies section below within this blog.  Students have been provided with the following steps for the course selection process:

Step 1:
Students log into PowerSchool account to select their courses, registration is available from Feb 10 - Feb 26.   Students can select their courses by selecting the class registration link which will only appear on the menu on the left side of the screen during the dates indicated above.

Step 2:
Students select classes by clicking on the pencil icon for each subject.  A red exclamation point indicates a selection is required.  Once selecting the icon, students will see available options under the heading as well as teacher recommendations (if applicable).  A green check mark indicates that a selection has been made or there is no required course to take for graduation under that subject.

Step 3:
Check your credit total at the very bottom of the screen (7 credit hours are required) and be sure to select at least 2 alternate classes that are different than primary requests.  In the example below, this student has 5 credits and needs 2 more as well as alternate selections.

Step 4:
Once you select classes, click on the blue “Okay” button to add them to your requests. Once you do this, course requests are visible on your screen and saved automatically.  However, you may return any time during the portal window to change course selections as needed. If you have any questions or need to make a change to your course selections after Feb 26, please see your school counselor.

School counselors have been meeting with students in advisories about the process and if students or parents have any questions about course selection, they should reach you to their child's school counselor.

Your Voice: SurveyWorks

We are pleased to announce that you and your children in grades 9-12 will have the opportunity to give feedback about Chariho Regional High School through SurveyWorks. SurveyWorks is a statewide survey that asks you questions about the learning environment of schools.  This is an opportunity to let Chariho Regional High School leadership know what you think about your child’s experience.  We are always open to suggestions on how to improve the learning environment for your children.

Topics on the survey include school safety, school climate, learning strategies, family support and others. As in previous years, all surveys are anonymous. All surveys are available in English and Spanish. Accommodations will be offered as necessary. See the steps below to complete your survey! We need your feedback!

Travel

As many families are contemplating travel and making decisions about upcoming school breaks/vacations we wanted to remind all families of our travel policy. As a reminder, students who travel out of state to any location with a positivity rate greater than 5% (those states are listed here, and the list is constantly updated) will require a 14-day quarantine upon return. Travel for Chariho is defined as going to another state to attend any event/performance, family gathering/party/reunion with people outside of your immediate household. It does not matter if it is overnight or a day trip. This is the preferred response of the RI Department of Health as well as what is required in our school committee approved policy, as a negative test only indicates that the virus is not currently present. In the event there are families who must travel, we ask that you inform your school principal so that we can accurately record absences and communicate with staff about attendance and plans for continuity of education upon return.

Is an Independent Study for You?

Independent Study is a student-centered, credit-bearing course of study, which is designed and pursued entirely by the student. It provides a unique and innovative opportunity for students to be self-directed and take ownership of their learning.

In other words...Is there a topic that isn’t offered as a class at Chariho? No worries, we can make it happen just for you! Want to learn more?  Contact Susie Scanapieco for more information: Susie.Scanapieco@Chariho.k12.ri.us
