DECEMBER 2019

Community WBL Breakfast

We look forward to hosting our first Community Work-Based Learning (WBL) Breakfast next Wednesday, December 11th.  Our intent is to build a meaningful connection between our community partners and students.  We are challenging ourselves to create as many applied and work-based learning experiences for our students as possible.  Our Work-Based Learning Program will provide underclassmen with internships and all students with classroom and site-based experiences that provide insight into professional habits of mind and applications of learning.  We look forward to working with our community partners to make this a reality for all students!

9th Grade Goes to College

CHS 9th graders went to College!  This past Thursday, December 5th, 278 freshmen visited and toured one of eleven colleges and universities in RI, including the Naval War College and the National Guard Training Center.  By offering this experience to our students, our hope is that they imagine themselves in higher learning.  We are building a Ladder to Learner Autonomy...Autonomy is developed when students are challenged to imagine themselves thriving in environments outside their comfort zone.  Our charge is to provide those opportunities!  See below for some images from this exciting day!

Peer Mentoring

This semester we are piloting a Peer Mentoring Program, targeting support for 9th grade students who are struggling to acclimate socially and academically to our school.  We see a tremendous opportunity for model student mentors to connect with 9th graders and share their experience, develop relationships, and guide them as they navigate the many challenges of freshman year.  As designed, mentors participated in mentorship training and have agreed to connect with their mentee at least 5 times during or immediately after school during Semester 1.  We are convinced that establishing this program and providing struggling students the opportunity to connect with a role model in our school will support improved student investment, engagement and success.  If your 9th grader may benefit from a peer mentor or if you are a 9th grader and would like to refer yourself, please contact Principal MacKenzie at Craig.MacKenzie@chariho.k12.ri.us.

State Accountability Rating

We are proud to share that we have received a 4-Star Rating as part of the RI School Accountability Reporting System.  A variety of data sources are used to evaluate school performance like test scores, graduation rates, chronic absenteeism, and assessment growth, to name a few.  Every public school in RI receives a Star Rating based on this data.  For more information on RIDE's Accountability system, please click here

Here is some information about our Star Rating from the RIDE website:

The 9th graders toured the RI Convention Center, Dunkin' Donuts Center, and the Omni Hotel.  They met with the Senior Sales Manager of the RI Convention Center, Executive Director of the Dunkin' Donuts Center, and the General Manager of the Omni Hotel.

The 10th graders facilitated and executed the annual Senior Citizens Luncheon with over 100 attendees.  We are touring the American Cruise Line executive offices this month.  We will meet with the President, Vice President, Sales and Marketing departments.
