School Improvement Team

In identifying areas of focus for the 18-19 academic year, this year's School Improvement Team reviewed progress and remaining prioritized recommendations from the NEASC Commendations & Recommendations report, the 17-18 School Improvement Plan, the newly revised District Strategic Plan (Vision 2023) as well as input from our Student Advisory Board.  The School Improvement Team prioritized the following 4 areas and developed essential questions to guide this work:

Subcommittees and accompanying actions plans have been established for each of the goal areas above. Click here to view our SIT Plan Action Steps & Progress.

We hope you can attend our final meeting on May 30th and help us start planning for next year's School Improvement Plan!

AP Exam Letter to Parents

Re: AP Exam Administration at URI
We are excited to announce that The University of Rhode Island has invited our AP students to take their AP Exams on the URI campus.  In the past year, we have been working to ensure that Chariho students taking AP courses are best prepared to represent their understanding on the AP exams, and the assessment environment is critical to student performance.  Administering the AP Exams at URI reinforces the unique opportunity our students have to earn college credit through achievement of a qualifying score of 3 or better on the AP Exam.  Placing them in a college setting helps our students to imagine themselves as college students and offers a glimpse at the college experience.
We understand that some students will be able to provide their own transportation, and others will need to be transported to and from URI.  Students will be able to drive themselves.  To secure a visitor parking permit:  Guests may park for free by registering their car in advance at https://uri.aimsparking.com/.  URI suggests Lots #1, 2, 6, and 11.  These lots are highlighted on a map provided to all AP students.  It is important to register your car to avoid any tickets.
Please review the attached schedule with your student, then complete this google form (Students can complete the form following consultation with you.) https://forms.gle/vJXxnENfjCRRCykM7for each AP Exam, letting us know whether your student will need transportation to and/or from URI.  We will provide maps and directions to the test sites on campus, and URI will provide signage that directs students where to be dropped off.
We are hopeful that this choice of venue positively impacts student performance and provides them with an experience that supports their transition from Chariho High School to college and career.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about our administration of AP Exams.
Regards,
Craig M. MacKenzie

SkillsUSA State Competition Results

Please join me in congratulating the following students who earned medals in the 2019 SkillsUSA state competitions.  The students who earned gold medals are eligible to compete in the national competition in Louisville at the end of June.   I personally want to thank the entire CHS staff for supporting these students, along with our other competitors, during the busy competition season.

From Hospitality & Event Planning

The 9th graders will be going on a field trip to tour The Ocean House Resort and the Weekapaug Inn.  Both of these properties have been awarded a 5 star rating by Forbes Standards, and all Hospitality students will have the opportunity to be employed or apply for an internship as a result of our visit.

The 9th, 10th and 11th graders participated in producing a Flip Grid video about the 5 Learner Qualities that will be viewed by Chariho Middle School Students so that they have a better understanding of the Learner Qualities we use at the High School and CHARIHOtech.

The 11th graders will participate and receive their certification from the American Hotel Lodging Educational Institute in Guest Service Gold.

The 12th graders were all successful presenting and passing their portfolio within the past two months; a big congratulations to them!  On May 10th, the senior class will participate in their Hospitality, Tourism Management Program certification exam.  On May 31st, they will produce and present their Johnson and Wales Senior Project to JWU Professors, RI Hospitality Association CEO, and the General Manager of the Dean Hotel in Providence.

Night School Update

Night School has officially started for the spring session. Night school typically runs Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 2:30pm until 4:30pm and is held in the MakerSpace (T5) or the Library. Student pickup is at the library exit until 4:35pm. After that your child can be picked up at the main entrance of the high school.

You can find all Night School information on the Chariho High School webpage under the Night School link on the bottom left hand side of the page. When you click on the Night School link you will enter the helpful online night school resource page.  Here, you can find out everything you need to know about night school like courses offered, costs depending on credit needed, how to go about signing up, and especially the dates and times night school runs each session.

Approximately two weeks prior to the end of fourth quarter, the night school calendar will be updated with the dates, times and locations of the Extended School Year (Summer School) session.

Attention Parents of 11th Grade Students:
