SPECIAL NOTICE: Chariho Career Fair

CHARIHO CAREER FAIR: Friday, Feb. 17th

Chariho parents: we need your support creating a meaningful career fair experience for our CHS students:
  • Do you have a career you would like to promote?
  • Would you like to help our students understand the expectations and pathways offered through your field?
  • Are you looking to recruit seasonal or full-time employees?
We will be hosting a career fair on February 17th for CHS and CTC students. At this event, representatives from various businesses, unions, and organizations will have their opportunity to meet with Chariho Regional High School students during advisory to discuss pathways to professions, expectations for professionals in the field, and expected income for various positions within the profession. Professionals will have tables/displays set up at Chariho Tech, or if necessary, at locations that allow them to best represent what they do. We need you to help our students understand the skills, expectations and pathways to success in your profession. Please contact CTC Director, Susan Votto, at Susan.Votto@Chariho.k12.ri.us or CHS Principal, Craig MacKenzie, at Craig.MacKenzie@chariho.k12.ri.us for more information. JANUARY 2017 Blog

Happy New Year to our students, families and the Chariho community.  As we kick off the new year, this month's issue of the blog will provide information to help better understand the graduation portfolio and a preview of the upcoming Career Fair.

Outlined below, our Portfolio Coordinators, Leanne Hackett and Jonathan Kelly, have captured essential information parents should know about the graduation portfolio.  Key questions to ask your child are outlined as well as expectations for specific grade-levels and important links and resources.  We hope this information will help you in supporting your child on their path to graduation.  We have worked to make accessing and updating the portfolio easy and understandable for your students and the advisors that support them.  In the end, students are responsible for uploading complete submissions (including rubrics and reflections when required), under the correct expectations (they can consult and confirm with their advisors or the portfolio coordinators every other day), and in a timely fashion (to meet grade-level benchmarks well in advance of their portfolio presentation).

We conclude this month's blog with information about our upcoming Career Fair.  We are recruiting representatives from businesses, unions and organizations to showcase your profession/field and help our students understand the skills, expectations and pathways to success in your position.

As always, we are grateful for the many ways our parents and larger community support our students at CHS and Chariho Tech.

Important Questions to Ask your Student

  • How do I access the Graduation Portfolio?
  • How many items do you have in the Graduation Portfolio?
  • What do you do during advisory? (Advisory is a time students have time to complete their Graduation Portfolio. They use this time to revise items, complete items, and upload and submit portfolio entries with the support of an advisory teacher.)
  • If you have a senior, do you know their Portfolio Presentation Date?  (Dates were given to students in October)
  • How many opportunities do students have to complete Portfolio Projects? Ask your student about the Portfolio Plan Sheet. Click the following link for the: Portfolio Plan Sheet.

Portfolio information for SENIORS:

Beginning of Year Benchmark: 24 items (with 9 items from Expectations #1 & #2 combined)

Presentations are upon us! Click here for: presentation information.

Students are encouraged to prepare for their presentation by taking advantage of opportunities to meet with teachers for items needed toward completing their Graduation Portfolio, revise items for teachers, choose items to present, and finally put together the final presentation. Students must meet their presentation date or an academic ESD will be assigned. After school assistance is available for students in need of revisions (for work submitted for prior years) or to obtain projects that need to meet proficiency. Click the following link for information on: after school assistance.

Students should finalize their presentation so that they have time to practice at least 10 days prior to their presentation date.  Practice will take place during their advisory.

To purchase senior prom or senior picnic tickets students must have completed and presented their Graduation Portfolio.

Portfolio Information for JUNIORS:

Beginning of the Year Benchmark: 16 items (with 6 items from Expectations #1 & #2 combined)

To purchase a prom ticket or apply for a parking pass, you must be at the Junior portfolio Benchmark!
