JUNE 2021

Semester 2 Exams

It's hard to believe that this week closes out the last instructional days for seniors.  Our senior exam week will take place June 1st through June 4th, with June 7th and June 8th as exam make-up days.  Seniors will be remain at home this week for their virtual exams, while grades 9-11 students will be reporting for in-person learning.

Our grades 9-11 exam week will take place June 16th through June 21st, with June 22nd and 23rd as an exam make-up days.  Grades 9-11 will remain at home this week for their virtual exams.  All students in Ms. Weeks, Ms. Lightfritz and Mr. Cronin’s classes will report in-person during both exam weeks.  Please click here for our Semester 2 Exam Schedule (you will see the senior exam schedule on the first page, please scroll to the second page for the exam schedule for grades 9-11).

Please understand that it is important that students take their exams at the scheduled time.  If, for some reason, a student misses an exam, permission to make-up the exam will require administrator approval.  Decisions will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.  If  a student needs to make-up the exam, they will be expected to email Mr. Mac, Ms. Spas or Mr. Auth for approval prior to the exam make-up date.

EVENTS!

We previously shared with you our End-of-Year Events Calendar.   Since then, we had a successful NHS Ceremony and Underclassmen Awards Night.  Let's keep hoping for beautiful weather.  It has been nice celebrating our students outdoors on our football field.  We made a slight adjustment to Senior Week:  In order to accomodate the Elementary Parades, Caps & Gowns will now be distributed on Tuesday, the 8th instead of Wednesday, the 9th.  Please click here for our end-of-year events calendar.

Please understand that all attendees must RSVP to all events in advance.  This is due to capacity and assigned seating needs for COVID safety purposes.

Senior Prom Update

Good news!  Senior Prom is sold out.  Everyone who signed up to bring a guest (either a Chariho guest or out-of-district guest) was able to do so.  Let's hope for beautiful weather for the night of our Senior Prom, which will be held on June 10th at 6:00pm at the Nordic Lodge.  Arrival for all students is at 5:30pm.

A Message from Health Careers...

The Health Careers I classes and Mrs. Dion would like to thank our Community of Healthcare Professionals for generously donating their time to us so that we could complete continue our exploration of the careers in the Health Care industry.  Due to COVID restrictions, our Explorer Program with South County Health has been temporarily suspended and our community stepped up and saved the day.   If you are a healthcare worker in any branch of the industry that would be willing to allow my class to interview you, I would really appreciate your support of our program.  You can contact me at martha.dion@chariho.k12.ri.us.  Thanks again to those that have provided us amazing opportunities to learn.

Alexis Haggerty, a senior Health Careers student, utilized PBL (project based learning) in developing "Fiddle boxes" for a local nursing home.  After her time in clinical rotations (hours that students must acquire to apply for their state CNA license) in a local nursing home, she noticed that the residents who would normally be engaged in activities communally, were unable to have this stimulation throughout the CoVid pandemic.  Once she completed research it was clear that a lack of cognitive stimulation in nursing homes is threatening the quality of life and well-being of their residents. Project-based learning is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to a complex question, problem, or challenge PBL consists of carefully designed problems that challenge students to use: • Critical thinking • Self-directed leaning Strategies.  PBL allows the learner to acquire an integrated, knowledge-based structure around real-world problems – problems the learner will face in future work, profession, community, and personal life.
