MARCH 2019 Blog

Upcoming SAT & PSAT Testing

On April 9th, juniors will take the SAT and on April 10th and 11th, sophomores will take the PSAT.  Any sophomore who has Advisory on a White Day will take the PSAT on the 10th and any sophomore who has Advisory on a Green Day will take the PSAT on the 11th.  Please note that this year, the PSAT will be a digital assessment, so students will be taking the PSAT on their device.  While these two assessments have always served nationally as a measure of student readiness for post-high school success, their value has increased as they are now a measure of school performance for all Rhode Island schools.  We are proud of the learning experiences we provide our students, and our recognition as a RI Commended school, the only school in the state with a Career and Technical Center.  We want to ensure that the Chariho diploma increases in value, and serves as a vehicle for increased opportunities for our graduates. These tests are also the primary means of meeting Chariho's Standardized Assessment Requirement for graduation.  Please join us in encouraging your students to take these exams seriously, to come to school rested and fed, and to do their very best towards improving future opportunities for themselves and all Chariho students.

Student Drop-Off/Pick-Up Before and After School

Recently we have had a few close calls in the front loop where traffic congestion, combined with driver eagerness to drop-off or pick-up have created hazardous conditions for students walking in and out of school at these busy times.  Please support student safety by following these guidelines when dropping off and picking up.
  • Pull your car past the front doors to drop off and pick up to allow for traffic to flow off of Switch Road more efficiently.
  • Refrain from creating two drop-off/pick-up lines.  This is how blind spots and the potential for accidents are created.
  • Take your time and look both ways before pulling away.

Nothing is more important than the safety of your children.

A Message from the World Language Department

In the upcoming months, students in World Language levels 4 and 5 will take the Assessment of Performance Toward Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL) to measure their language proficiency to qualify for the Seal of Biliteracy.  Chariho Regional School District will award a Seal of Biliteracy to graduating seniors who are able to demonstrate proficiency in English and one or more other world languages.  The Seal highlights individuals with multilingual and multicultural competence to potential employers and provides universities with a method of identifying and giving credit to applicants with high levels of proficiency.  By June 1 of the graduating year, students may apply for a Diploma Seal when they successfully complete requirements for the Seal.  For more information, please see the Seal of Biliteracy Application which can be found on the HS webpage under the School Counseling tab.

Your Voice: SurveyWorks

If you haven't done so already, please consider providing feedback about Chariho Regional High School through SurveyWorks. SurveyWorks is a statewide survey that asks you questions about the learning environment of schools.  This is an opportunity to let Chariho Regional High School leadership know what you think about your child’s experience.  We are always open to suggestions on how to improve the learning environment for your children.

Topics on the survey include school safety, school climate, learning strategies, family support and others. As in previous years, all surveys are anonymous. Students already completed the survey in late January/early February. Parents are also encouraged to participate.  Please go to:  http://surveys.panoramaed.com/ride and enter the access code: 98101family.   All surveys are available in English and Spanish. Accommodations will be offered as necessary.

The survey results are most useful when all parents participate.  Your views on matters like the safety of your child at school, the way students are taught, the condition of the school, and how connected you feel to this school are important.  By taking this short survey you can help our school leadership and School Improvement Team. Responses are anonymous and cannot be linked to any individual; no one can tie your responses back to you. For more information about Survey Works, please click here. If you don’t have access to the Internet, please contact Mrs. Nikki Scott at 364-7778 ext. 2102 to access a paper survey. The last day to complete the survey is March 31st.

Night School

Every once in a while, students may find themselves in need of Night School or Summer School at some point in their high school career.  If you ever wondered what the above entails, you can find that information on the Chariho High School webpage under the Night School link on the bottom left hand side of the page. When you click on the Night School link you will enter the helpful online night school resource page.  Here, you can find out everything you need to know about night school like courses offered, costs depending on credit needed, how to go about signing up, and especially the dates and times night school runs each session. Approximately two-weeks prior to the end of each quarter or semester, the night school calendar is updated with the dates, times and locations of the new session. If there is inclement weather expected the calendar will be updated as soon as the night school coordinator is notified and a new date will be added to the calendar as a makeup day.

So if your student is currently enrolled in night school or might be in the future, please be aware of the resource page we have listed on the Chariho High School webpage under the Night School link.
