DECEMBER 2020

Early Release Wednesdays

This past week, we had a chance to attend a School Committee Meeting where parents, students, community members, teachers and administrators had an open discussion about a potential Distance Learning or Early Release day once a week.   We were grateful for the open and honest dialogue and for the opportunity to hear from our parents, teachers and students.  As a collective team, we have decided that we will schedule Early Release to take place once a week on Wednesdays.  This will begin on 12/9/20.  The Early Release Wednesday Block Schedule can be found here.  This schedule applies to both in-person and distance learning students.  In-person learning begins at 7:30 and students will be dismissed at 11:20 to allow for grab-and-go lunch pick-up prior to exiting the building.  Students are expected to eat their lunches once they arrive at home.  Students are not permitted to eat on the bus.  The remainder of the day can be used by students for asynchronous learning, where students can work on course content and assignments at their own pace.  They are not expected to login in for distance learning.  The intent is for our Early Release Wednesdays to provide planning and collaborative time for our teachers for the purpose of in-person, concurrent and distance learning.  Thank you for your flexibility so that we can best meet the needs of our in-person and distance learning students and our educators.  We will continue to keep you posted on any changes as they come about.

A Reminder About the Daily Self-Check

Parents and Guardians: As a reminder, all in-person learners must have a daily self-check completed every day prior to leaving the house. Any student who participates in athletics, extracurricular activities, or receives services at school will also need the daily self-check completed. This is a requirement from our state as well as part of our District Attendance Policy. Any family that does not consistently complete this self-check will be required to move to distance learning. It is imperative that we ensure everyone is healthy when attending school. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated while we work to keep our school communities safe.

The Importance of Checking Email

This is a reminder to students to make sure to get into a routine of checking your email on a regular basis.  This is especially important for our distance learning students seeing that this is a primary method that many of your teachers use to communicate with you.  Checking your email is a good practice to build into your daily routine and will be an important life skill to develop as this will be essential in both college and career.

Meeting the Needs of Our Disengaged Distance Learners

Our school counselors are working closely with our mental health clinicians, deans of students, nurse, and related service providers to ensure supports are in place for our disengaged distance learners.  If you are a distance learning (DL) student or are a parent of a student who is struggling with distance learning, please make sure to reach out to your respective school counselor who will connect with you supports and create a plan with action goals, clear next steps, and a plan for monitoring progress.

From the South County Prevention Coalition

The South County Prevention Coalition has created a winter newsletter that features information to support parents in keeping their youth safe and healthy this holiday season.  The newsletter contains information about how to talk to your teen about alcohol and drugs, ways to destress, resources and more!  Access the newsletter by clicking here.

From the Leadership in Recreation Class

The Leadership in Recreation class has worked collaboratively with Mrs. Wilbur and her art students in creating murals in our locker rooms and fitness areas.  See below for some examples of the final products!  Mrs. Wilbur and her students helped with the mural sketching and shared their artistic ideas.  This project engaged students in measuring the walls, designing the murals to fit the measurements, sketching the designs onto the walls and then completing the project by painting the sketches.  I am proud of this class for their collective efforts!    ~Mr. Shiels

From Hospitality & Event Planning

All students in Hospitality & Event Planning will participate in ServSafe Training this month.  There are 4 main topics they will learn about which include COVID-19 Precautions:
ServSafe Conflict De-escalation, ServSafe Reopening Guidance, ServSafe Delivery Precautions, and ServSafe Takeout Precautions. This training is made possible due to our longstanding relationship with Rhode Island Hospitality.  We also engaged our students with a guest speaker from The Shelter Harbor Golf Club.  The Food and Beverage Director, Cheryl Wisch, spoke with the students about the private golf resort business and employment opportunities.  Please take a look at the slide show @CharihoHospitality on instagram.  We would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season!

Interactive Lesson with our Sister School in China

To strengthen our relationship with our sister school in China, our Chinese teacher, Ms. Minli Lusher, has developed a virtual language class through Zoom this semester in order to collaborate with students in China.  The main idea is about providing the most authentic language practice to our Chariho students in the Chinese classroom.  Recently, our Chinese 3 class had their second Zoom session with our sister school from China.  The students were interacting virtually, and they had a great time.  Mr. MacKenzie and Mr. Pecoraro joined us through Zoom as well. Mr. MacKenzie gave a special gift (a drawstring bag with a special designed logo) to our students, and he got to reconnect with the Mr. Yuan, the principal from Liuyang No. 1 High School, and our first year Chinese teacher, Wangling.  Chariho students sang a Chinese song, and the students from China sang an English song.   After that, Chariho students and Chinese students were divided into different groups, and had conversation in their target language in the breakout rooms. The students are highly motivated when they see that they are successful in communicating with native speakers of their same age level. They also gained deeper learning of the authentic culture by interacting with the native speakers.  See some pictures below from the recent collaborative session with students from our sister school in China.      ~Ms. Minli Lusher

From the Athletics Department

Signups for winter sports will begin later this week on family ID.  As we get more information regarding winter sports start dates and the winter sports season from RIIL and the Governor’s task force, that information will be posted on the athletic website as soon as it is received.  That information will also be sent to the Winter sports coaches who will relay the information to athletes.  Please check periodically on the website for any new information.
