FEBRUARY 2020

Course Selection Process

Beginning on Friday, February 7th, students will begin the course selection process.  It is important that students thoughtfully plan out their course of study.  Decisions made in their early high school years can impact future course scheduling.  Students are encouraged to access our Program of Studies to map out their plan of study.  More information about our Program of Studies can be found in the Program of Studies section below within this blog.  Students have been provided with the following steps for the course selection process:

Step 1:
Students log into PowerSchool account to select their courses, registration is available from Feb 7 - Feb 19.   Students can select their courses by selecting the class registration link which will only appear on the menu on the left side of the screen during the dates indicated above.

Step 2:
Students select classes by clicking on the pencil icon for each subject.  A red exclamation point indicates a selection is required.  Once selecting the icon, students will see available options under the heading as well as teacher recommendations (if applicable).  A green check mark indicates that a selection has been made or there is no required course to take for graduation under that subject.

Step 3:
Check your credit total at the very bottom of the screen (7 credit hours are required) and be sure to select at least 2 alternate classes that are different than primary requests.  In the example below, this student has 5 credits and needs 2 more as well as alternate selections.

Step 4:
Once you select classes, click on the blue “Okay” button to add them to your requests. Once you do this, course requests are visible on your screen and saved automatically.  However, you may return any time during the portal window to change course selections as needed. If you have any questions or need to make a change to your course selections after Feb 19, please see your school counselor.

Program of Studies

The 2020-2021 Program of Studies is now available to parents and students!  Please encourage students to access the Program when selecting their courses.  Our hope is that students are thoughtful in their course selection process and use the Program of Studies as a guide in determining what courses best match their needs and future interests.   The table of contents is now hyperlinked so they can jump to the desired section by clicking on the page # to the right.  The Program of Studies can be found on the CHS Website under the Student Resources tab or you can access it by clicking here.

Alumni Luncheon

On February 11th at 11am, a Senior Citizen Alumni Luncheon is taking place at CHARIHOtech that will include some of our high school’s first alumni classes (‘61-’73). This is the first initiative of its kind, aimed at reaching out to and reconnecting with some of our earliest graduates. We are excited to also welcome a small group of CHS’ first teachers, who taught during the 1960s and beyond.

From the Athletic Department

Congratulations to the Girls Indoor Track Team who are now the Division Champions, winning the Dwyer Division this past Saturday!

Unsung Heroes Luncheon:

On Monday, January 27th, English 9 Honors students welcomed a dozen local veterans to attend a luncheon celebrating their service, and sharing the legacy of the Unsung Heroes these students studied throughout Quarter 2. The event was incredibly meaningful, for both the students and their guests! This community connection truly made an impact, and gave students the opportunity to hear the stories of some incredible local heroes. Thank you to the Chariho community for supporting and sharing this event! We look forward to continuing it next year!

From the Hospitality Program

It's been another exciting month in Hospitality and Event Planning!

The freshmen class scheduled a field trip to the Mystic Marriott to meet with the Executive Management Team.  They are providing a continental breakfast, tour of the facility, and offering internships and employment opportunities.

The sophomore class planned the Alumni Luncheon.  This event will take place on February 11th and we have 60 Chariho Alumni from the class of 1961 to 1973.  Students will greet, register, serve guests, execute the agenda including guest speakers, photographs, and music.

The junior class is planning the Louisville Buffet: Friday, March 20th & Artessy: Saturday, March 21st.  They also planned a field trip to Providence to the Renaissance Marriott Hotel.

The senior class is competing in Pro-Start at RI Convention Center.  Last year each member of the winning team won a $1500.00 scholarship to JWU for four years; a total of $6000.00.  The team also was recognized at the state capital by the Senate Majority Leader and the Speaker of the House.  In addition, they were recognized by RI Hospitality Association President, Heather Singleton and a private luncheon with the General Manager of the Omni Hotel in Providence, Mr. Burnell Goodman.
