Re-imagine & Immersion Experiences

CHS is going to College!  During the week of December 9th, we hope to provide all interested CHS students the opportunity to visit and tour one of eleven colleges and universities in RI, including the Naval War College and the National Guard Training Center.  Our goal is to help students imagine themselves in higher learning.  We are building a Ladder to Learner Autonomy...Autonomy is developed when students are challenged to imagine themselves thriving in environments outside their comfort zone.  Our charge is to provide those opportunities! Students are registering for their school of choice via a Google Form.

Last week, 22 seniors and juniors were trained as Peer Mentors as part of our initiative to connect students struggling to engage in our school community.  Mentors will support students personally and academically, sharing their experience and encouraging our young Chargers to become actively involved in their learning experience and in Chariho extracurriculars.  Teachers and parents can refer students who could benefit from Peer Mentoring through our Mentee Referral Form

On Friday, Oct. 25th, 22 students from Chariho and Hope High Schools participated in our first 'Imagine' experience at URI.  Students got to know each other and learned about essentials of success in transitioning to college from URI students, toured campus, ate at the dining hall and discussed service learning with URI faculty, and learned about the admission process.

See Tweets below capturing some of these experiences from the past couple of weeks!

School Improvement Team Update

Our School Improvement Team has met twice this year and we have created 3 goal areas to focus efforts towards during the 19-20 academic year.  Our goal areas include 1) a focus on providing proactive supports for 9th graders, 2) creating imagine/immersion experiences where CHS students can see themselves in various post-HS opportunities and 3) creating mentoring supports for our students.  Click here to learn more about our SIT goals and to see the guiding questions that will help drive this critical work.

Please consider attending our next School Improvement Team meeting, which will take place on November 21st at 2:30 in the CHS Library.

Community Pineapples

This past month, we hosted a week of pineapples where faculty opened their classrooms to colleagues as well as the Chariho community in order to observe best instructional practices.  Some of this past month's pineapple topics included research design, self-directed learning, peer accountability partners, student self-pacing, ceramics design, small group text-based discussions, station rotation, differentiated instruction, rhetorical strategies, project-based learning presentations, growth mindset work, kinesthetic modeling and more!  There will be additional weeks of Pineapples to come!

On Behalf of the Class Advisors

The class advisors of all four grades are organizing a basket raffle to be held the first two weeks of December. The fundraiser is going to benefit all grades and, starting November 11th, students will be invited to participate by creating a theme-based gift basket in their advisory. Advisories may fill their own basket or pair up with another group and fill one basket together. Students are encouraged to be creative and purchase/donate theme related items.  Raffle tickets will be sold the first two weeks of December and winners’ names will be drawn on December 13th. 10% of money raised will be donated to Gingerbread Express, the rest will be split evenly among the four classes for class activities.

From the Class of 2022

The Class of 2022 will be having a dine in at Friendly's in Mystic on Thursday November 21st from 5pm to 9pm.  Students will be given voucher slips via advisory the week before the dine in.

Spirit Week Festivities

We just closed out a very spirited 4-days of Spirit Week and look forward to still having our Color Day & Pep Rally, which will take place on Thursday, November 7th.  A special thank you to Mr. Shiels and the students in his Leadership in Recreation class for organizing all events and to our PE department for their coordination as well.  Here are some highlights from a very fun past week with high-levels of student participation:
