Learner Qualities & the Report Card

Since September, all students have been instructed in five learner qualities through their advisory classes.  By now, all students have been expected to rate their performance within each of the learner qualities for their seven, academic courses.  Throughout December, teachers held individual conferences with each of their students to discuss their learner quality performance, including the student's self-ratings as well as the teacher's ratings.  Please click here for the rubric that has been used to guide this discussion.  As we have shared, the following learner qualities will be rated as “meets" or "does not meet" on the upcoming semester report card:

Self-Directed Learner:  Learners take initiative and are active participants in the learning process. Learners make meaning by linking their story, their new learning and their purpose. Learners carefully plan their learning journey.

Quality Producer:  Learners create organized and professional products. Learners always wonder about why and how. Learners take risks and explore in order to arrive at new solutions.

Collaborative Worker:  Learners work together, especially in a joint intellectual effort. Learners fight for inclusion and work to ensure all voices are represented and heard.

Respectful Citizen:  Learners are positive participants who engage others in the academic and social aspects of work. Learners have a sense of belonging, of being part of a learning community at school, at work, at home, and in social networks.

Growth Mindset:  Learners recognize that effort creates ability. Learners know that those who work, learn. Learners demonstrate an openness and readiness to learn and understand that they are in control of their own destiny.

The semester 1 report cards will be issued the week of February 4th.  You will notice that two, new columns have been added for learner quality scores, titled: LQ1 and LQ2.  LQ1 column is for the first semester LQ grade and LQ2 is for the second semester LQ grade.  Towards the top, there is information about how LQs are scored for the report card: 100=5 of 5 learner qualities met, 80=4 of 5 met, 60=3 of 5 met, 40=2 of 5 met, 0=0 of 5 met.  There is a message at the bottom of the report card informing parents that they can access more detailed information about learner quality performance by logging directly into PowerSchool.  In order to view Learner Quality performance per course within PowerSchool, please do the following:

  1.  Login into PowerSchool (students can also login to check as well)
  2.  Click on the grade in the "L1" column next to the course you want to view the LQ rating
  3.  It will then bring up the Learner Qualities and the rating associated with each LQ

Learner quality ratings are specific to the Chariho High School report card and will not be reported to colleges via transcripts.  Here is a preview of what the report card will look like:

As always, we appreciate the support of our parents and community in reinforcing these essential skills for our students and in continuing our practice of holding our Chariho High School students to the highest of expectations.  Be on the lookout for your child's LQ ratings on the upcoming semester report card!

We will be hosting a career fair on February 8th for CHS and CTC students. Professionals will have tables/displays set up at in the HS Gymnasium. We need you to help our students understand the skills, expectations and pathways to success in your profession. Please contact CTC Director, Gerald Auth, at Gerald.Auth@Chariho.k12.ri.us or CHS Principal, Craig MacKenzie, at Craig.MacKenzie@chariho.k12.ri.us for more information. Your Voice: SurveyWorks

We are pleased to announce that you and your children in grades 9-12 will have the opportunity to give feedback about Chariho Regional High School through SurveyWorks. SurveyWorks is a statewide survey that asks you questions about the learning environment of schools.  This is an opportunity to let Chariho Regional High School leadership know what you think about your child’s experience.  We are always open to suggestions on how to improve the learning environment for your children.

Topics on the survey include school safety, school climate, learning strategies, family support and others. As in previous years, all surveys are anonymous. Students will take the survey during advisory time on Thursday, January 31 and Friday, February 1, 2019. Make up days will be Monday, February 4, and Tuesday, February 5, 2019.   All educators, students and families are invited to participate in SurveyWorks.  We encourage families to go to:  http://surveys.panoramaed.com/ride and enter the access code: 98101family.   All surveys are available in English and Spanish. Accommodations will be offered as necessary.

The survey results are most useful when all parents participate.  Please participate as we are looking for 100% participation! Your views on matters like the safety of your child at school, the way students are taught, the condition of the school, and how connected you feel to this school are important.  By taking this short survey you can help our school leadership and School Improvement Team. Responses are anonymous and cannot be linked to any individual; no one can tie your responses back to you. For more information about Survey Works, please click here. If you don’t have access to the Internet, please contact Mrs. Nikki Scott at 364-7778 ext. 2102 to access a paper survey.

A Message from the French Program

On January 16th, CHS/CMS French teacher, Claire Leatham, and her CHS French 3, French 4 and French 5 students held 2 back-to-back assemblies in the CMS auditorium, the first assembly for an audience of CHS students and the second for the entire sixth grade. One of the goals of the assemblies was to familiarize Chariho students with French and with the Chariho French program to help them with language course decisions as part of their upcoming course selections.

Mrs. Leatham and her students presented their exciting and challenging Véronique, Fille Unique  French film project in which small student groups each produced a film in French of a scene from the same 12 scene French play, Véronique, Fille Unique.  After showing the films, many of the participating students participated in a panel on stage and shared their reflections on the experience of the film project as part of the proficiency-oriented French program at CHS. Mrs. Leatham has encouraged participating students to submit their films to the 2019 Chariho Film Festival as this would provide another audience for  their French film accomplishments.
