Welcome Back Letter

Dear Students and Parents/Guardians:

On behalf of all the Chariho Charger faculty and staff, it is our pleasure to welcome you to the new school year.  Whether you are an incoming 9th grader, a transfer student, a new CTC student or a returning student, we invite you to take an active role in our school community.  Chariho Regional High School offers incredible opportunities to its students, both in course offerings from highly qualified teachers and in a variety of extended learning experiences and extracurricular activities that support both personal and academic growth.

We are proud of our recognition by US News and World Report as the 3rd Ranked School in Rhode Island.  This standing in the educational community is a product of the shared commitment by community partners, parents, faculty and students to making the Chariho learning experience meaningful.  Trust that we have set the bar higher, and that we move towards the new school year committed to making your student’s learning experience as personalized as possible.

This year we will be assessing Learner Qualities--Self-Directed Learner, Quality Producer, Collaborative Worker, Respectful Citizen, Growth--in our report card.  We will provide students with instruction and awareness about these essential 21st century skills throughout the school year. Students and teachers will conference at mid-quarter of Q1 and Q3 to assess their performance and set goals, and teachers will provide assessments on the semester report cards.  We value these skills and know that including their assessment in our report card will foster meaningful conversations between students, parents and teachers.

Chariho Regional High School welcomes visiting Chinese teacher Ms. Wang Ling.  She comes to Chariho as part of a Teachers of Critical Languages Grant we won last year.  If you are interested in learning Mandarin Chinese and learning about Chinese culture, seats in Chinese 1 are available.

We are excited to share this year’s AP (Advanced Placement) assessment results.  This past year, we have had a building-wide focus on AP performance. Teachers and students have invested their time on effective AP study strategies, specifically time management skills, testing perseverance, and frequent assessment practice.  Students were also provided with AP study sessions and, new to this year, students took their AP exams at the University of Rhode Island. This venue served as an opportunity for students to visualize their future at a post-secondary institution and provided students with the opportunity to experience exam taking on a college campus.  This year’s AP results were released this July, and we are happy to share that our AP scores increased by 17-points from 2017 to 2018. The percentage of students who received a 3 or above on their AP exam this year was 74.6% which far exceeds the State performance of 57.7%. We are very proud of the efforts made by our AP teachers and AP students this past year and look forward to continuing this trend.

Students at our school have the unique opportunity to take advantage of our numerous career pathways through our career and technical programs or by creating their own individual pathway.  Our goal, as an Administrative Team, is for students to progress through their years increasingly ready to direct their own learning. We want our students to take advantage of unique learning opportunities where they can access a variety of personalized pathways aligned to their interests and future aspirations.  Our hope is that our students leave Chariho Regional High School having experienced a variety of courses aligned to their personal interests and future endeavors. Our career pathways are designed to prepare students to be both college and career ready while aligning to industry demand and post-secondary benchmarks.

The continuing implementation of our Chariho 1:1 Technology Initiative offers students and parents/guardians communication systems, including our Learning Management System – Canvas – that will provide you and your students with real time access to course assignments, resources and teacher access that support communication essential to keeping students connected to learning.  Parents who want to join courses on Canvas as observers can create their own access and password from the Canvas home page.  To view a brief tutorial, go to (https://community.canvaslms.com/videos/1302).   Also we encourage parents, guardians and students to review The Responsible Use Policy to avoid liability for damages to devices.  A device insurance plan is available for purchase to cover damages incurred outside this policy. Go to the Chariho website: click on Chariho 1:1.

Summer Study at Chariho includes grade-specific expectations linked to academic and post-secondary goals.  There is also a required reading expectation.  Requirements for each grade level are outlined on the CHS Website. Students will present their Summer Study in advisories in September.  We will identify model presentations for commendation in October.

Teacher professional development in the past year has focused on creating student-centered learning environments where students have at least some control of the time, place, path and/or pace of their learning.  Our goal is to provide our students with the experiences and resources to practice the skills essential to college and career readiness.  Our instructional practice and student supports are designed to help our students climb the Ladder to Learner Autonomy.  We want our students to be increasingly self- aware and self-directed in their learning. Parents’ role in this instructional model is critical!  We need you to actively contribute to our school community through participation in the CHS Community Partnership (https://sites.google.com/chariho.k12.ri.us/chs-cp/home), School Improvement Team, Athletic Boosters, and the various extracurricular activities we offer.  Most importantly, we want open and clear communication regarding students’ academic progress and the exciting instruction happening in our classrooms.

CHARIHOtech, our career and technical center, continues to grow in enrollment and programs of study.  We now offer twenty-two career and technical programs for students in southern Rhode Island starting in Grade 9.   The career and technical center provides students with high quality, hands-on learning experiences that connect students to industry standards, certifications and post-secondary credits, ensuring students to be college and career ready upon graduation.  In 2018, CHARIHOtech students received over 300 industry certifications to help secure employment opportunities, were enrolled in Advanced Placement (AP) courses at Chariho Regional High School, and received 90 college credits while enrolled in a career and technical program.  Yes, our students exceed in the classroom too! Please contact CHARIOtech Director Mr. Auth (Gerald.Auth@chariho.k12.ri.us) to learn more about our diverse programs of study being offered. If you are new to our school, please join us on Tuesday, August 28, from 5:00 -7:00 pm for our Freshman/New Student Orientation.  The event includes a building tour, an introduction to 9th grade teams/CTC programs, a sports’ and clubs’ fair, and a BBQ.

All students entering Grades 6-12 who are transferring to Chariho from another district will be required to attend a 1.5 hour laptop training with their parent in the MS Auditorium.  Both parent and student will sign off on policies. Students will receive their school-issued device and some hands-on training.  Choice of training dates are: August 29 at 6:00 -7:30 pm or September 6 at 3:00 - 4:30 pm.

All students entering 9th grade who attended Chariho Middle School will be receiving an important email to their school Google email in early August.  This email includes mandatory pre-work they must done before swapping out their school-issued ChromeBook for a school-issued 11 inch Mac Air Laptop.  The students are able to swap out their device directly before the New Students Orientation. See email for more information.

As always, communication is key!  Together we can ensure that all students receive a quality education and a meaningful and memorable high school experience.  Please do not  hesitate to contact us at any time. You can also stay up to date by accessing our monthly Parent Newsletter Blog. To see our blog visit: charihohighschool.blogspot.com.

Looking forward to a great school year!

New Expectations for AP students:

There are two critical deadlines in August for all students enrolled in AP courses.  Please click here to read about summer deadlines for Advanced Placement Exam payment as well as summer coursework expectations.  Next year, Chariho reimburses exam payment to students scoring 3, 4 or 5 on their AP Exam.
