SEPTEMBER 2016 Blog

We are excited to share our new blog site that will provide monthly updates to the CHS and CTC community about school-related topics, departmental happenings and important upcoming events.

As a leadership team, one area that is really important to us is establishing connections with our parents, students and the Chariho community.  One way to build connections is through our School Improvement Team (SIT).  We welcome students, parents and community members to join us for our first meeting, which will be held on September 29th at 2:30 in the CHS library.  After this initial meeting, we will likely have sub-committees that will focus on specific goals developed by the School Improvement Team.  Please email Andrea.Spas@Chariho.k12.ri.us if you are interested in joining SIT or a sub-committee.

We welcome you to our Open House on Thursday, October 6th, from 5:30pm-8:00pm.  We are excited about the new design of Open House this year.  Our goal is that parents have the opportunity  and flexibility to meet their students' teachers, to learn about course themes and pathways for future study, and to connect to our school community through a Parent Outreach Fair in the cafeteria.

Open House will look different because:
  • Parents and students are encouraged to come together so students can introduce their parents to teachers.
  • Parents can move to department "zones" mapped in the building at their own pace.
  • Students and teachers will participate in showcases of departmental learning.
  • Teachers of common courses will offer presentations at times arranged to allow parents to hear a formal presentation, or simply stop in and introduce themselves.
  • CTC programs will offer 4, 20-minute tours of the 17 programs.
If you want to follow your students schedule, you may.  This evening is not about conferencing with your child's teachers.  It's an opportunity for introductions and education on all the supports available to help your student succeed.  We will send out a map and schedule of presentations in advance of October 6th.    We want to see all Chariho parents and their students in the building on Thursday, October 6th!  Click here to preview events and room locations.

Please contact us if you have any questions about this important event.  Thank you in advance for your support of CHS/CTC Open House!

Physical Education
The goal of physical education is to develop educated individuals who have the knowledge, skills, and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of healthful physical activity.  Physical Education is required by state law for all students grade 9-12 and is a graduation requirement at Chariho Regional High School.  Students exceeding 5 unexcused absences may lose course credit.

English Department
  • Students are required to take English 9 and 10. In Grade 11, students have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement (AP) Language, while Grade 12 students are offered AP Literature as alternatives to English 12. There are several elective offerings that represent varied interests.

Math Department
Graduation Requirements:
All Chariho students are required to successfully complete Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2 and an additional 4th credit of mathematics during their career here at CHS.

Computer Science Opportunities:
Did you know that in 2014 fewer than 350 students graduated from a Rhode Island college/university with a bachelor’s degree in CS?  There are more than 1,000 open CS jobs available in the state and that number is expected to rise.
Start by getting some exposure to the field of computer science by taking one or more of the following electives offered by the math department:
  • Lego Robotics
  • Intro to Coding
  • Advanced Coding
  • AP Computer Science Principles
Khan Academy:
Mathematical success starts with building a strong foundation.  Ask your students how they are using Khan Academy to support their learning!

School Counseling
Financial Aid: Changes are happening to the financial aid process (FAFSA) for the 2017-2018 school year that will impact our current seniors. Come to a Financial Aid presentation by Mrs. Haines-Mayne on October 5th at 6:30 in the high school library to learn more!

PSAT Testing: All sophomores will be taking the PSAT at no cost on October 19th during the school day. Juniors who would like to participate (and be eligible for the National Merit Scholarship program) must pay $16 (cash or checks payable to SAF #211G). Juniors should see their school counselor by the 9/27 if interested. The results of the test include personalized SAT prep material and a customized online site. (Juniors will be provided the opportunity to take the SAT at no cost in April).

What else is happening?: School counselors have conducted two group presentations this year with seniors on college applications and financial aid. Freshman presentations introducing who we are and what we do are next on our schedule. We are starting to meet with all seniors (to discuss future goals) and freshman (to discuss transition to the HS) individually as well. Next month we will turn our focus to sophomores and juniors.

1:1 Technology Information
Parents can have access to their children's courses through Canvas. See the steps below to get a Parent Observer account.

How to become a Canvas observer:
  1. You will need the child's login and password to Canvas (same one they use for Powerschool and to log onto the laptop). You may ask your child for the login or call guidance to request the password be mailed to you.
  2. Use any computer or device with internet connection.
  3. Go to chariho.instructure.com
  4. Click the ribbon that states "Click Here for an Account"
  5. Fill in the prompts and begin to navigate as an observer (your child will have to provide you his/her password).
Please know that Powerschool is still the most accurate measure of a student's overall grade.
